The only significant trade from Panthers GM Dale Talon at the 2020 NHL trade deadline was an interesting one, as he dealt struggling former All-Star Vincent Trocheck to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Erik Haula, Lucas Wallmark, Chase Priskie, and Eetu Luostarien.
Erik Haula missed almost the entire 2018-19 season with injury and was traded to Carolina from the Vegas Golden Knights last summer. In 42 games with the team, Haula had 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points. His career AB score is a +0.13 over a 5-year sample size, and he is coming off three straight positive seasons. His penalty taken/drawn ratio was a respectable 9:7, and his giveaway/takeaway ratio was 26:15. Under new coach Rod Brind’Amour, Haula saw almost two extra minutes of ice time per night than his previous career-high of 13:52. As a 28-year old, Haula currently makes $2.75 million for the remainder of this season and is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. Lucas Wallmark was a 4th round pick of the Hurricanes in the 2014 NHL draft. Last season, he played in 81 games for the Hurricanes and scored 10 goals with 18 assists for 28 points. This season, he had 11 goals and 12 assists for 23 points in 21 fewer games played. He was averaging about 40 seconds less ice time in his sophomore season under Rod Brind’Amour than his previous career-high of 13:29. His career AB score is a -4.11 for his one NHL season of play. His penalty taken/drawn ratio this season was an impressive 7:13, and his giveaway/takeaway ratio was also an impressive 15:21 at an even 0 +/- number as well. He currently makes $675k and is set to become a restricted free agent at the conclusion of this season.
Chase Priskie is a 23-year old defense prospect that was drafted in the 6th round of the 2016 NHL draft by the Washington Capitals. In 52 games with the Charlotte Checkers this season, Priskie scored 6 goals and registered 25 assists for 31 points. He was +1 in those games +/- wise and spent 22 minutes in the penalty box. Eetu Luostarien is a 21-year old center prospect that was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2017 NHL draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. In 44 games with the Charlotte Checkers this season, Luostarien scored 8 goals and registered 17 assists for 25 points. He was -1 in those games +/- wise and spent 24 minutes in the penalty box.
The Panthers have a 33-24-6 record and are currently two points back of 3rd place in the Atlantic Division, with a game in hand on the Toronto Maple Leafs, who currently holds the position. The Panthers and the Leafs are set to face off tonight at 7pm Eastern time in Sunrise Florida to battle for that 3rd playoff spot. More to come.
